Derek de LaatPresident

Derek de Laat is the president of FIN IP Group. Mr. de Laat’s career has been focused on bringing credible and advanced financial services to the IP market. He has developed over 500 patent acquisition models, developed hundreds of program royalty rates, supported deals in excess of $2 billion, and helped raise patent portfolio and litigation financing in excess of $200 million. With more than a decade of experience, Mr. de Laat has structured various IP transactions, developed industry-leading financial models, and played a key role in major IP licensing deals spanning multiple technologies.

Recognized globally for his expertise, Mr. de Laat has been named one of the world’s leading 300 IP strategists (IAM300) for six consecutive years (2019-2024). He has also been selected as an IAM Global Leader for 2023 and 2024, part of an exclusive group driving strategies that maximize the value of IP portfolios. He is also the co-chair of the Ottawa Licensing Executive Society (LES) and a committee member of the LES valuation committee.

Prior to founding FIN IP Group, Mr. de Laat served as Vice President of IP Investments & Valuation at WiLAN, a renowned patent licensing company, where he oversaw financial strategies for licensing and acquisitions. Earlier in his career, he held key roles at BlackBerry and Rockstar Consortium, contributing significantly to the monetization and licensing of their patent portfolios. He also taught Business Decision Modeling and Valuation part-time at Carleton University.

Mr. de Laat holds a Bachelor of Science in Finance from Erasmus University (Rotterdam School of Management) and an MBA in Finance from Carleton University (Sprott School of Business). He is a Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA), Certified Management Accountant (CMA), Certified Licensing Professional (CLP) and a Certified Patent Valuation Analyst (CPVA).

 
Julian Cupillari Senior Director

Julian Cupillari, Senior Director at FIN IP Group, has been an integral part of the company since its inception. Recognized as one of the world’s leading 300 IP strategists (IAM300) for 2024, Mr. Cupillari specializes in financial modeling and developing royalty rates for intellectual property.

With nearly a decade of experience in financial modeling and analysis, he has developed complex financial models for international organizations across sectors such as hospitality, education, technology, and healthcare. In 2016, he played a pivotal role in the US$3 billion acquisition of FRHI Hotels & Resorts by AccorHotels. Mr. Cupillari also led the Business Development Team at the Financial Modeling Institute, a leading global provider of financial modeling accreditations.

Mr. Cupillari holds an Honours in Business Administration from Western University (Richard Ivey School of Business) and a Master’s in Innovation and Entrepreneurship from Queen’s University (Smith School of Business). He is also a Certified Patent Valuation Analyst (CPVA), a Certified Licensing Professional (CLP), an Accredited Business Valuator (ASA-BV), and holds the Advanced Financial Modeler (AFM)                                                                                         accreditation. 

 
Jonathan Ravindran Director of Growth and Strategy

Jonathan Ravindran, Director of Growth and Strategy at FIN IP Group, brings a strong background in go-to-market strategy, sales enablement, and strategic planning. Jonathan has built his career driving commercial growth at high-growth startups.

Prior to joining FIN IP Group, Jonathan served as a Go to Market at Flexport, a global freight forwarding and logistics company and at Ada Support, a leading AI-powered customer support platform.

Jonathan holds a Bachelor of Arts in Law and Society from Wilfrid Laurier University.

 
Allisha Lin Manager

Allisha Lin, Manager at FIN IP Group, specializes in royalty rate analysis, and combines her expertise in financial modeling, precise valuations, and market-specific insights to help clients navigate licensing and monetization opportunities.

Prior to joining FIN IP Group, Allisha worked as a Data Analyst at Employment and Social Development Canada, where she developed robust analytical models

Allisha holds a Bachelor of Commerce with a major in Finance from Carleton University (Sprott School of Business) and the Advanced Financial Modeler (AFM) accreditation. Allisha is also a member of the Licensing Executive Society (LES).

 
Andrew Kugler Manager
Andrew Kugler, Manager at FIN IP Group, is responsible for client project management, software development, and AI integration, leveraging his extensive expertise in technical leadership and innovation to drive strategic outcomes.
 
Prior to joining FIN IP Group, Andrew worked at Blackberry for over 12 years. As a Full Stack Developer, he built and scaled IoT solutions for large customers managing tens of thousands of devices in the intermodal shipping industry. His innovations in this space led to securing 7 granted patents. As a QA Team Lead, he guided a team of eight to enhance automation, data visualization, and reporting.
 
Andrew holds an MBA with a concentration in Financial Management (Sprott School of Business) and a Bachelor of Engineering in Computer Systems Engineering, both from Carleton University.
 
Daniel CheungSenior Financial Analyst

Daniel Cheung, Senior Financial Analyst at FIN IP Group, specializes financial modeling, statistics, market research and data analytics. Daniel brings strong capabilities in complex financial analysis and data-driven market research to help clients make informed, high-impact decisions.

Liam CabralSenior Financial Analyst
