Derek de Laat, President FIN IP Group

Derek de Laat is the president of FIN IP Group. Mr. de Laat’s career has been focused on bringing credible and advanced financial services to the IP market. He has developed over 500 patent acquisition models, developed hundreds of program royalty rates, supported deals in excess of $2 billion, and helped raise patent portfolio and litigation financing in excess of $200 million. With more than a decade of experience, Mr. de Laat has structured various IP transactions, developed industry-leading financial models, and played a key role in major IP licensing deals spanning multiple technologies.

Recognized globally for his expertise, Mr. de Laat has been named one of the world’s leading 300 IP strategists (IAM300) for six consecutive years (2019-2024). He has also been selected as an IAM Global Leader for 2023 and 2024, part of an exclusive group driving strategies that maximize the value of IP portfolios. He is also the co-chair of the Ottawa Licensing Executive Society (LES) and a committee member of the LES valuation committee.

Prior to founding FIN IP Group, Mr. de Laat served as Vice President of IP Investments & Valuation at WiLAN, a renowned patent licensing company, where he oversaw financial strategies for licensing and acquisitions. Earlier in his career, he held key roles at BlackBerry and Rockstar Consortium, contributing significantly to the monetization and licensing of their patent portfolios. He also taught Business Decision Modeling and Valuation part-time at Carleton University.

Mr. de Laat holds a Bachelor of Science in Finance from Erasmus University (Rotterdam School of Management) and an MBA in Finance from Carleton University (Sprott School of Business). He is a Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA), Certified Management Accountant (CMA), Certified Licensing Professional (CLP) and a Certified Patent Valuation Analyst (CPVA).

Julian Cupillari, Senior Director at FIN IP Group, has been an integral part of the company since its inception. Mr. Cupillari specializes in financial modeling and developing royalty rates for intellectual property.

With nearly a decade of experience in financial modeling and analysis, he has developed complex financial models for international organizations across sectors such as hospitality, education, technology, and healthcare. In 2016, he played a pivotal role in the US$3 billion acquisition of FRHI Hotels & Resorts by AccorHotels.

Mr. Cupillari holds an Honours in Business Administration from Western University (Richard Ivey School of Business) and a Master’s in Innovation and Entrepreneurship from Queen’ University (Smith School of Business). He is also a Certified Patent Valuation Analyst (CPVA), a Certified Licensing Professional (CLP), an Accredited Business Valuator (ASA-BV), and holds the Advanced Financial Modeling (AFM) accreditation.
